One of the greatest concerns among new students is how to manage the size of UW-Madison. Course sections of Freshman Composition, General Chemistry and Calculus, among others, are reserved for each residence hall community. Enrolling in a residence hall class section is an excellent way to establish a sense of community organized around learning and getting good grades. Many of these class sections meet in residence hall classrooms where instructors often hold office hours and/or review sessions. Students all live in the same community and quickly make new friends and study together with ease.

A First-Year Interest Group (FIG) consists of a group of 20 first-year students who live in the same residence hall or "residential neighborhood" and who also enroll in a cluster of three classes together.
Each FIG cluster of courses has a central theme; the central or "synthesizing" course integrates content from the other two classes.
