West Campus Stormwater Project

This fall, UW-Madison will begin implementing a comprehensive west campus stormwater management project to reduce sediment and pollutants that flow into Lake Mendota.  The summer and fall, the project will create four bio-retention areas in Eagle Heights and University Houses.

In general, the construction  consists of grading and earth work, removal of soil from the site and replacement with engineered soil materals that drain more effectively, and the installation of herbaceous plantings.

Work is expected to being in mid-August.  As soon as we have more detailed information from campus, we will share it with residents.  We are committed to minimizing the impact on Univeristy Apartments residents during the construction process.

In University Houses:

  • Two rain gardens will be created between the west end of the apartments and the Univeristy Houses gardens.

  • Construction vehicles will access the site using the gravel servce drive from the top of Haight Rd.

In Eagle Heights:

  • Two large bio-retention areas will be created to help manage stormwater in Eagle Heights.
  • One will  be located adjacent to Lake Mendota Dr. behind buildings 301 and 302.  Construction access will be from the corner of Lake Mendota Dr. and Eagle Heights Dr.  The bus stop and pedestrian walkways will remain accessible throughout the project.
  • The other Eagle Heights bio-retention area will be directly behind buildings 503 and 506 and there will be temporary construction access road in front of building 502.
  • Fences will be put up around the work area for safety.
