Go Easy on Yourself.

Thinking about returning to the University Residence Halls in 2008-09?

We asked students who lived in the Residence Halls last year to describe living off campus versus living on campus.

Here’s what they told us...

What do you miss the most from living in the Residence Halls last year?

"It’s a great way to make friends, and it seems a lot harder to meet new people when they are a whole house away." - Lindsay B.

What are some surprises in your off campus housing experience?

"You run out of food very fast and if you’re not careful, you may not have anything to eat! Apartments get dirty very fast and YOU have to clean them!" - Josh M.

What are you enjoying most about living off campus?

"I am finally feeling like I am in college--living on my own and with people that collectively come together to mature into adults for the day when we have to live alone." - Kelsy M.

What advice do you have for students trying to decide where to live next year?

"Consider how well you actually know the people that you think you want to live with. I’ve seen a number of people have terrible years because they clashed with the people they thought were their best friends." - Dustin S.

University Residence Halls Border Curve

Residents have the option to dine in any of our food service locations.

Food for thought...

  • Students have a lifetime of grocery shopping and washing dishes ahead of them; why not take advantage of plentiful food service which is just steps away.
  • Live where security is of highest priority and an electronic locking system allows for 24 hour monitoring of door locks.
  • Select your own room next year; last year, there was no waiting list for single rooms in Tripp, our non-freshman hall; there’s lots of great choices.
  • Student advising offices right in your own home; take advantage of career advising as well as good advice about courses you need to graduate.
  • Convenient, in-house laundry rooms; no need to trek out to laundromats.
  • Of course, for the moment, our students enjoy the Big Ten Network in the comfort of their campus homes when most Madison area residents cannot.
