Residence Hall Staff

Residence Hall Student Staff

A variety of staff members work with residents to shape the residence hall communities. Residents are encouraged to seek out other members of their hall community, including staff members, and get to know them.

House Fellows

House Fellows are student staff members with whom residents have the most frequent contact. Their main responsibilities include:

  • helping residents plan activities and programs to build connections among residents
  • being available and visible to residents
  • acting as a resource and providing information to residents
  • helping residents solve problems or referring residents to a variety of University agencies in order to help solve problems or answer questions
  • enforcing University and Housing policies
  • helping with administrative tasks.

Multicultural Resident Consultants

We have nine Multicultural Resident Consultants (MRCs) that are additional live-in student staff. The MRCs essentially serve as peer mentors for students by providing additional support and resources to all students in relation to race, culture and ethnicity. They specifically reach out to students who have self-identified as students of color and/or international students seeking particular support in the residence halls and throughout the campus community. Some of their specific responsibilities include:

  • sponsoring programs in the residence halls, and in the MSC-Housing Satellite
  • creating social opportunities for students to meet and get connected
  • identifying various academic resources and services for students
  • assisting students in getting connected and acclimated to college life
  • serving as a role model.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Liaisons

We have two LGBT Student Liaisons that are additional live-in student staff within the residence halls. The LGBT Liaisons provide supplemental support and resources to all students who either identify as LGBT or who identify as an ally for LGBT students. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • assisting LGBT students in University Housing in receiving social support through formal/informal networking
  • planning and implementing ongoing social events for LGBT students and allies
  • providing students and housing staff with information regarding resources/support on-campus and in the Madison community about LGBT issues/activities/social services
  • supporting University Housing’s Safe Zone Program.

Although House Fellows, Multicultural Resident Consultants and LGBT Liaisons can use their room for meetings of their own personal interest, staff in these positions may not use their position to pressure, coerce, or inappropriately influence student residents to attend or participate in these personal activities and meetings. If you feel that any staff in these positions have used their position to pressure or coerce you, please contact your Residence Life Coordinator.

Involvement Coordinators and Program Advisors

We have Involvement Coordinators and Program Advisors who work within the residence halls. They provide opportunities and resources for residents to get involved in hall, campus, and Madison community activities. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • acting as the primary advisor to hall organizations
  • training and evaluating involved student leaders
  • assisting students in accessing resources for their involvement interests
  • work with students to develop and offer diverse and inclusive activities
  • coordinating the selection, training, and supervision of Badger Buddies
  • facilitating and advising Wisconsin Welcome activities.

The Program Advisors work in the Bradley Learning Community and Chadbourne Residential College and have additional responsibilities that are unique to those communities.

Community Service Coordinators

University Housing has Community Service Coordinators (CSC) working with residents to support their involvement in community service. The CSCs have the following responsibilities in their individual buildings:

  • staying knowledgeable of various community service organizations throughout the Madison community
  • publicizing community service opportunities to all residents
  • working with involved students to plan and implement community service programming
  • assisting in coordinating an alternative spring break trip, if hall interest exists.

Academic Program Coordinators

Academic achievement is one of the top priorities of students. Therefore creating communities that foster academic success is a priority of the University Residence Halls. All residence hall communities have an Academic Program Coordinator (APC) who focuses on our shared priority. APCs coordinate academic programs that are found in your community by working closely with students, staff, and faculty. Some of their responsibilities include:

  • facilitating the formation of study groups
  • promoting tutoring and academic advising services
  • coordinating academic goal-setting and recognition activities
  • providing opportunities for students to learn and develop skills.
