CRC residents

Welcome

Our mission:

As a partnership between University Housing and the College of Letters and Science, Chadbourne Residential College (CRC) is a vibrant community of students, staff, and faculty committed to interdisciplinary learning and civic engagement for the purpose of developing responsible, invested citizens in our local and global communities.

About Us:

Chadbourne Residential College is 700 undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who live together in Barnard and Chadbourne Halls. Together with staff, faculty, and community partners, CRC blends academic life and residential hall living. Our in-house cafeteria, Rheta’s and newly renovated facilities complement our goal of community engagement across disciplines. Join us!

Integrating Academic Learning with Residential Life and Citizenship

CRC (Chadbourne & Barnard Halls) is an outstanding platform for helping students develop their potential through interpersonal connections and academic and extracurricular engagement. Co-sponsored by the College of Letters & Science and University Housing, CRC blends academic with residential hall life. Students learn as much from each other as from formal academics, so we strive to offer the benefits of a small liberal arts college within our world-class research university.

  • CRC gives first-year students fun and intellectually engaging opportunities to get to know sophomores, juniors, seniors, faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • CRC offers the most small courses and course sections. UW-Madison courses reserved for CRC residents include CRC seminars and special topics, math, Afro-American Studies, chemistry, history, journalism, English, women's studies, political science, sociology, and others.
  • CRC residents have fun and learn from each other, faculty, and staff during our trips to museums, plays and musical events, our inter-floor competitions and formal social dinners, our "What Matters to Me and Why"; series where prominent scholars speak personally about their work, and our monthly social "teas," ski trips, and Common Read programs.

CRC Renovation

Chadbourne and Barnard halls are nearly complete with the first phase of a three phase major renovation project. First phase highlights include a renovated basement at Barnard, a new bathroom, den and kitchen on all resident floors at Chadbourne and a completely remodeled first floor at Chadbourne that includes a new classroom and Resource Center. This has been a very exciting project!

Phase two and three incorporate additional upgrades at both Chadbourne and Barnard, but until phases two and three are complete in August 2010, you will notice the contrast between newly renovated and yet to be renovated areas. In addition, there will likely be some items from phase one that will not be finished until sometime in September. We are working closely with the contractor to schedule any remaining items in a way to minimize any possible inconvenience to you - we know you need to sleep and study! Thank you in advance for your patience as we work toward the completion of this project.

As mentioned, phase two and three will be completed in August 2010 and we invite you to consider living with us next year and be the first group to live in and enjoy the completed NEW facilities. Updates on phases two and three of this project will be provided at a Community Forum meeting this fall.
