Door County Fish Boil
The Fish boil Tradition started with Door County's Scandinavian fishermen and lumbermen. Designed to serve a large group as well as provide an interesting show, the Fish boil will be an exciting experience for your guests. UW Housing Catering's menu includes Lake Michigan Whitefish boiled with potatoes and onions, coleslaw made from locally grown cabbage, and tea breads with orchard fruits and nuts, and a finishing touch of cherry pie. In addition, Catering is happy to tailor the menu to meet your group's needs!
The Technique
Fish boils are an experience, not just a delicious meal. About 30 gallons of water are boiled over a large, hard-wood fire. When all of the food is cooked, kerosene is thrown onto the fire, causing the flames to climb 20 to 30 feet into the air. The intense heat produced causes the water to boil over and extinguish the flames. Then, dinner is served!
