International Learning Community Tenth Anniversary
The 2012-2013 academic year marks the tenth anniversary of the ILC. We will be celebrating this milestone with a number of events and programs throughout the year. For more information on attending events or becoming involved please contact Asha Misra, ILC Program Coordinator.
The ILC began in the fall of 1996 with the opening of the “The Global Village” on the top floor of Merit Hall with 26 residents. Its mission then was to explore cultural similarities and differences through guest speakers, discussing and debating global issues, and building friendships. Under the leadership of Professor Mike Hinden, the Global Village expanded into the International Learning Community in the fall of 2002, moving to Adams Hall to accommodate a greater numbers of students and to add a language immersion component. During the 2011-2012 academic year, the ILC featured language immersion houses in Arabic, German, Italian, Japanese, Nordic, Russian, and Spanish (also known as Baytunaa, Stockwerk Deutsch, Piazza Italia, Nihongo Hausu, Norden House, Russkii Dom, and Residencia de Estudiantes). Rubén Medina, Professor and Chair of the Spanish and Portuguese department, has served as the faculty director of the ILC since 2003. The ILC experience continues to be ideal for students planning to study abroad or returning from studying abroad, international and exchange students, students studying foreign languages, and any student interested in international studies/relations.
ILC Convocation (Roundtable Dinner) Remarks by Michael Hinden, Co-Founder of the ILC, 09/11/12.
