Questions About LGBT Issues on Campus

Where can I meet other lgbt students?

Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people. There are numerous social and educational events going on all the time that you can attend. You can volunteer or work at the LGBT Campus Center, you can help out with the Ten Percent Society dances or events, you can help plan LGBT Socials in Housing, or you can participate in activism with the Queer Student Alliance or the ASM Diversity Committee. These are just a few of the many organizations you can get involved with…for more information, check out the campus resources page. You can also talk to your LGBT Liaisons, who know many, many other queer students and allies on campus who you might want to meet.

I am not out, but would like to meet other people who understand what I am going through. What should I do?

You can always talk with your LGBT Liaisons. They are available to talk with you about your experiences and feelings, and your own coming out process. They are knowledgeable about other resources and people across campus who may also be able to support you. You can also look into the Coming Out groups that are offered in the LGBT Campus Center, which are confidential, small, support groups lead by trained students.

Who can I talk to about harassment or discrimination issues?

In University Housing, you can talk to any student staff or professional staff person in your Residence Hall. This includes Housefellows, LGBT Liaisons, MRCs, and Res Life Coordinators, just to name a few. The most important thing is to talk to someone if you think that harassment or discrimination might be happening. University Housing is committed to providing safe, welcoming, and supportive communities for all students, and if you are concerned about certain things people are saying or doing, it is better to err on the safe side, rather than risk having someone be in an unsafe or hostile situation. Beyond University Housing, there are also other people and resources campus-wide who are here to help: Dean of Students Harassment Reporting.
