Carson Gulley
Construction Schedule: May 2012 - May 2013
Building Closed & Being Emptied
April 2, 2012
Carson Gulley Commons and its dining venue, Carson's Carryout, officially closed their doors for a year of building renovations at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012. Construction contractor bidding for the extensive renovation of the 86-year-old building has been opened, with asbestos removal tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, April 16. In the meantime, University Housing Dining & Culinary Services professional staff and student employees have been busy removing furniture, food service equipment, and products out of Carson Gulley in preparation for construction work to begin. Carson's large pizza oven will temporarily be moved to the lower level of Holt Commons, where pizza delivery, take-out options, and grocery items will be offered to residents during the 2012-13 academic year. Other food options for lakeshore neighborhood residents during Carson Gulley's renovation include the Elizabeth Waters Dining Room in Elizabeth Waters Residence Hall and the brand new Four Lakes Market in Dejope Residence Hall.
Plans for Carson's renovation also include a number of new marketplace-style dining venues, a separate convenience store, infrastructure improvements (new elevators, windows, bathrooms, and heating, plumbing, and electrical systems), and a new, informal student/residence life lounge with program space for Tripp, Adams, and Slichter Residence Halls. Throughout construction, care will be taken to maintain the historical integrity of the building, due to its location in a historical area of the UW-Madison campus. Carson Gulley Commons will reopen with these improvements and much more in summer 2013.
