Fall 2012 seminar info:

African American Studies - Multiculturalism in Societal Places And Other Spaces
Time: Wednesdays from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
Course details: African American Studies 199 - (Enrollment Class #21342)

The purpose of this course is to investigate multiculturalism in individual, societal, and institutional spaces. MLC residents have a thrist to understand the problems and issues, as well as, the benefits and contributions of human diversity. Learning is a lifelong experience, so MLC residents seek this understanding to constructively shape their actions and behavior in order to be successful and caring students and citizens, and to prepare to work and serve others.

Multicultural advocates (e.g., students) argue that...

  • People interact within existing institutions and social practices in which the values, beliefs, bodies of knowledge, styles of communication, and biases of the dominant culture are imposed.
  • People were/are often limited in their power to articulate and realize their goals or are forced to rearticulate them.
  • Cultural identity is based on experiences and values learned as part of our ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, socioeconomic level, primary language, sexuality, geographical region, place of residence (e.g., rural or urban), dis/abilities, etc. that continuously reshaped by influential factors and conditions (i.e., politics, environment).

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Examine your own beliefs, ideas, behaviors and involvement in issues
  • Discuss the intersections among aspects of identity and systems of oppression
  • Identify the dynamics of power relations and the associated material effects
  • Examine how life experiences are shaped by factors at the individual, societal, and institutional levels
  • Identify and/or formulate plans of action that challenge/resist oppression/oppressive forces

All MLC residents are encouraged to enroll in an essential, for credit, progressive seminar course on multicultural education. This seminar is a cornerstone of the MLC experience, conveniently located in the MSC Satellite across the street from Witte Hall. Register for this course at the Witte CCAS advising table at SOAR. Late registration is possible, contact one of the Residence Life Coordinators. View this flyer for specific information for the Fall 2012 Seminar.
