Welcome to New 32 Hall (Opening August 2013)
Ecologically Minded and Centrally Located
University Housing's newest residence hall, temporarily named New 32 Hall, will be centrally located in the lakeshore neighborhood south of Kronshage Hall (Showerman House) and east of Holt Commons and Cole Hall on the former location of parking lot 32. Construction began in May 2012 in response to demand from first-year students and their families for additional campus housing, and the building is set to be formally named, dedicated, and opened before August 2013. The new five story residence hall is near Lake Mendota, Allen Centennial Gardens, Steenbock Library, and the UW Gymnasium-Natatorium, and will boast a number of new features when complete:
- 172 beds in 86 carpeted double rooms
- Four residential floors with a kitchennette and lounge on each
- Individual heat/air conditioning controls in each room
- Greenhouse on fourth floor
- Rooftop solar panels to assist with hot water heating
- Electricity and water consumption monitors throughout the building
- Classroom, main lounge, kitchen, offices, and laundry on lower level
GreenHouse Learning Community
New 32 Residence Hall will be the new home of the GreenHouse Learning Community when it opens in August 2013. Formerly located in Cole Hall, GreenHouse is designed for students interested in a tight-knit community to think, work, and live in more sustainable ways. Activities include: gardening, cooking, fixing bicycles, restoring prairies, and more. New 32’s greenhouse will allow learning community members to grow their own plants and flowers, and its classroom and program spaces will provide flexible places for residents to learn, socialize, and relax.
