Frequently Asked Questions about Student Employment

As UW-Madison’s largest employer of students, University Housing becomes more than a new place to call home to many residents; we are also a new place to work!

Student employees are an important part of the University Housing community and play a crucial role in maintaining our high quality services. Every year, new residents join our team of more than 1,700 student employees. From food service to residence life to facilities maintenance and custodial services, student employees help keep our operations running smoothly.

Many students find that a part-time job working for Housing can be very rewarding – beyond just the paycheck. Housing jobs help employees to develop valuable time management skills as well as make life-long friendships. Our employees tell us that they appreciate working “close to home,” in a diverse workplace that is dedicated to excellence. Students find that working several hours a few times a week helps them to prioritize their time and reinforces the importance of punctuality. Many of our employees also find that working for University Housing can help them get on the right path at UW-Madison, by providing some structure amid so many other variables in their daily routines.

A quick word about “work-study” status: while all of our positions are approved for work-study, having work-study is not a requirement, nor does a Housing job run out when the work-study component (related to financial aid) does.

We look forward to welcoming our new employees in the fall!
