Expanded Housing

Why does the Division of University Housing have Expanded Housing?

The University Residence Halls wants to offer housing to as many students as possible, particularly students who are new to the UW-Madison campus. This is why we “expand” our capacity to offer more contracts to students enabling them to be part of the on-campus experience. Expanded Housing space is something that we carefully plan for every year.

Who can be assigned to Expanded Housing?

Any student who returns a contract to live in the University Residence Halls can initially be assigned to a space in Expanded Housing.

Where are Expanded Housing spaces located?

  • University Residence Hall den (lounge) spaces typically in the following residence halls: Elizabeth Waters and Ogg. Anywhere from 2-4 people assigned to a den depending on size of the den.
  • Short Course Halls rooms owned and operated by the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences. Located in the Lakeshore area of campus, we typically rent 48 spaces in the Short Course Halls to accommodate a portion of our Expanded Housing students. Double rooms with 2 people assigned per room.

How long are students typically in an Expanded Housing space?

Students initially assigned to Expanded Housing can be there for as little as a couple days to as long as the first semester. Students assigned to the Expanded Housing spaces in the Short Course Halls will move into their permanent assignment by November 1st.  As spaces open during the fall semester, students in the Short Course Halls will be offered permanent room assignments before all other student room change requests. Students in dens receive second priority for permanent room assignments. We provide transportation assistance to students moving out of Expanded Housing into to a different residence hall.

What are the room amenities for a student living in Expanded Housing?

All the same amenities and furnishings available to students in permanent assignments are available to students assigned to Expanded Housing. Expanded Housing room doors are lockable. Students pay a reduced rate while they are living in Expanded Housing; regular room charges begin on the date they are scheduled to move to a permanent assignment.

What academic resources are available to me during my stay in the Short Course Halls?

Cross-College Advising Services (CCAS) are available in nearby Dejope Hall. Additionally, academic tutoring services are located in a number of locations across campus. Spring residence hall class sections will also be available to you once you are assigned permanently. Our staff are ready to direct you to a variety of resources to enhance your academic success.
