Learning Community Room Selection
Are only rooms in the learning communities available during the room selection process?
Yes, only the following communities are available during the Learning Community Room Selection process:
- Women in Science and Engineering (in Sellery Hall)
- Substance-Free House (in Sullivan Hall)
- The Studio: Creative Arts and Design Community (in Sellery Hall)
- Open House: Gender Learning Community (in Phillips Hall)
- Multicultural Learning Community (in Witte Hall)
- International Learning Community (in Adams Hall)
- GreenHouse (in New 32 Hall)
- Entrepreneurial Residential Learning Community (in Sellery Hall)
- Chadbourne Residential College (in Chadbourne Hall and Barnard Hall)

So how does this work and what do I need to do?
- Sign your University Residence Halls contract and submit your deposit in My UW Housing.
- Select one of the Learning Communities as your top choice when you submit your hall preferences in My UW Housing. If you have already submitted your preferences, you can login and make changes by May 1, 2013.
- Pay the $250 Advance Payment bill in My UW Housing no later than May 1, 2013. For best room selection, we recommend submitting your Advance Payment in early April.
- We will send you an email invitation to participate in Learning Community Room Selection during April 24 - May 3, 2013.
- Log in to My UW Housing and select your room for 2013–14!
What are the benefits of participating in the Learning Community Room Selection process?
The most important benefit is that you are guaranteeing your participation in a learning community for your first year on campus. The UW-Madison campus has had residential learning community options for 15 years. You will become a part of this long standing tradition.
By choosing your 2013-14 assignment during the learning community room selection process, you are guaranteeing where you will be placed for the start of the Fall 2013 semester!
When would I find out who my roommate is?
We will email you with a link to My UW Housing in early June that will have your roommate’s name, address, phone number, and email address.
How can my friend and I select a room together during the Learning Community Room Selection process?
You and your friend will both want to follow these simple steps:
- List one of the residential learning communities as your top preference choice.
- Pay the $250 Advance Payment no later than May 1, 2013.
- Log in to My UW Housing between April 24- May 3, 2013 and find a completely open double room in the community of your choice and each pick into that same room. Spaces may be limited so we encourage you both to do this early.
- That's it! Start planning how you want to set up your room!
I had another hall as my first choice, but was invited to participate in Learning Community selection. What does this mean?
If you select a room during the Learning Community Room Selection process, this will be your room assignment for 2013-14 and you will not go through our mass assignment process in May. You are finished and have guaranteed your assignment!
If you decide you would rather not live in a learning community, you will instead go through our mass assignment process. This computerized system does not guarantee assignment to your first choice hall since you have an equal chance of being assigned to your first or last choice.
What happens if the Learning Community I'm interested in is full?
Communities can fill quickly; Learning Community spaces are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check back, as spaces may become available throughout the selection week. Consider selecting a room in another community if your top choice has filled.
I selected a Residential Learning Community room and now do not want to live in that room and/or building. What should I do?
If you’d like to simply select a different room number within your top learning community, you are free to do so yourself. Simply click “change my assignment” to re-select a different space from April 24-May 3, 2013.
If you’ve changed your mind and would like to live in a different learning community, please email the Assignment Office (assignme@housing.wisc.edu) so we can provide access for you to choose a new learning community room. Be certain to include your Name and Campus ID number in the email by May 3, 2013.
If you no longer want any learning community as your top choice, please email the Assignment Office (assignme@housing.wisc.edu) so we can remove this room from your assignment. Be certain to include your Name and Campus ID number in the email.
Since you will then go through our regular mass assignment process, you’ll want to re-rank your hall preferences to ensure your list is accurate. Modifications to your hall preferences can be made until May 1, 2013. Please note that there are no guarantees that you will be granted an assignment in your new first hall preference.
