Staff Performance Concerns and Compliments
Residence Hall Student Staff
A variety of staff members work with residents to shape the residence hall communities. Residents are encouraged to seek out other members of their hall community, including staff members, and get to know them.
House Fellows
House Fellows are student staff members with whom residents have the most frequent contact. Their main responsibilities include:
- Helping residents plan activities and programs to build connections among residents
- Being available and visible to residents
- Acting as a resource and providing information to residents
- Helping residents solve problems or referring residents to a variety of University agencies in order to help solve problems or answer questions
- Enforcing University and Housing policies
- Helping with administrative tasks.
Diversity Coordinators: Multicultural Resource Coordinators
We have nine Diversity Coordinators who are student staff members available to support residents based on their identities. The Diversity Coordinators serve as peer mentors for students by providing additional support and resources to all students covering a variety of social justice issues. They specifically reach out to students who have self-identified as students of color and/or international students seeking specific support in the residence halls and throughout the campus community. Some of their specific responsibilities include:
- Sponsoring programs in the residence halls, and in the Housing Satellite
- Creating social opportunities for students to meet and get connected
- Identifying various academic resources and services for students
- Assisting students in getting connected and acclimated to college life
- Serving as a role model.
Diversity Coordnators: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Resource Coordinators
We have two students that work in this role. The LGBTQ Liaisons provide supplemental support and resources to all students who either identify as LGBTQ or who identify as an ally for LGBT Q students. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Assisting LGBTQ students in University Housing in receiving social support through formal/informal networking
- Providing direction and support to the GSA’s (gay straight alliances)
- Planning and implementing ongoing social events for LGBTQ students and allies
- Providing students and housing staff with information regarding resources/support on-campus and in the Madison community about LGBTQ issues/activities/social services
- Supporting University Housing’s Safe Zone Program.
Involvement Coordinators and Program Advisors
We have Involvement Coordinators and Program Advisors who work within the residence halls. They provide opportunities and resources for residents to get involved in hall, campus, and Madison community activities. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Acting as the primary advisor to hall organizations
- Training and advising involved student leaders
- Assisting students in accessing resources for their involvement interests
- Work with students to develop and offer diverse and inclusive activities
- Coordinating the selection, training, and supervision of Badger Buddies
- Facilitating and advising Wisconsin Welcome activities.
The Program Advisor works in the Bradley Learning Community and has additional responsibilities that are unique to the Bradley Learning Community.
Academic Program Coordinators
Academic achievement is one of the top priorities of students. Therefore creating communities that foster academic success is a priority of the University Residence Halls. All residence hall communities have an Academic Program Coordinator (APC) who focuses on our shared priority. APCs coordinate academic programs that are found in your community by working closely with students, staff, and faculty. Some of their responsibilities include:
- Facilitating the formation of study groups
- Promoting tutoring and academic advising services
- Coordinating academic goal-setting and recognition activities
- Providing opportunities for students to learn and develop skills.
Residence Hall Career Staff
Residence Life Coordinators and Area Coordinators
The Residence Life Coordinators and Area Coordinators are full-time professional staff members who are responsible for each hall. Their main responsibilities include:
- Supervising the House Fellow staff in the hall
- Helping to create inclusive communities that promote student involvement and academic success
- Helping students to connect with each other and to get involved in residence hall and campus activities
- Advising students who plan activities and programs
- Educating students about citizenship, healthy decision making, and creating socially just communities
- Administering the Housing and University disciplinary processes
- Balancing the needs and rights of individuals with the rights and needs of the community
- Assisting residents who are having academic, emotional, or interpersonal problems
- Incorporating campus academic programs and services into the hall
- Acting as a liaison to the hall with facilities, food service, and desk staffs
- Coordinating liaison efforts with University Police, the Wisconsin Union, University Health Services, Cross-College Advising Service, Morgridge Center, and other University departments.
Building Supervisor
The Building Supervisor in each hall is the primary contact for Physical Facilities related issues. The Building Supervisor in each hall supervises the custodians and is your contact person for custodial related concerns.
House Custodian
As a member of each house community, the House Custodian is responsible for cleaning the common areas of each house and hall including bathrooms, dens, lounges, hallways, and stairwells.
Director/Assistant Director of Desk Services
The Director/Assistant Directors of Desk Services supervise the student staff members who work at the desk and should be the staff you contact if you have questions, suggestions, or concerns about desk services in your hall. They can be reached at 265-6616 or 262-4323.
Residence Hall Facilities Staff (2nd and 3rd shift)
Second and third shift staff perform general cleaning tasks, make minor mechanical repairs, and perform limited rounds and report unsafe conditions to University Police or other Housing staff. The second shift(3:00 p.m.-11:00 p.m.) and third shift (11:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m.) staff can be contacted through a House Fellow or your hall desk.
