Connecting a Switch, Game Console or Other DeviceRegistration for DevicesResNet has implemented a registration process called NetReg. This process is specifically designed for computers with internet browsers. As a result, other network devices such as game consoles or TiVo's need to use an alternate method to register. You can do this by registering your game console or other network device on the MyResNet site. More information about registration and NetReg is found on our NetReg Implementation page. Routers, Switches, Hubs, and Wireless Access PointsIf you have brought a router, switch, hub, or wireless access points from home that you plan to use in your room please read this information. The following is an excerpt from ResNet's Appropriate Use Policy referring to our official policy on routers, switches, hubs and wireless access points. Retransmission or propagation of the ResNet network connection through the use of switches, hubs, routers or wireless access points is allowed for personal use within the resident's room or apartment. ResNet or DoIT Help Desk staffs do not provide technical support for these devices. Any troubleshooting of your network connection will require that your computer be plugged directly into the data jack. All devices placed on the ResNet network must be securely and properly configured, and the resident who registers the device(s) will be solely responsible for any violation or abuse of the ResNet AUP resulting from the use of the device(s). Any device that causes network-related problems or denies service to other users may be disconnected from the network without prior warning. Note: Any computers connected to ResNet through your router or wireless access point are your responsibility. For example, if a computer in the room next door connects through your wireless router to ResNet and becomes infected with a virus, the router will be quarantined until the infected computer is cleaned. ResNet recommends that residents with wireless access points use some type of encryption or protection on their device like WEP. For a guide on setting up a secure wireless access point consult the ResNet wireless router configuration documents. For information on registering your computer through a router, switch, hub, or wireless access point see our NetReg page. Devices Without Web Browsers (Games Consoles, TiVo, etc.)To connect your device to ResNet, fill out our online registration form on MyResNet. After registering, plug the device into the data jack in your room or apartment. You should automatically receive a valid IP address. TroubleshootingIf your device is not getting online, check the settings to make sure it has IP address information given to you by ResNet. Make sure it is set to receive an IP address automatically (please see the instruction manual for your device). Check to make sure that the data cable is plugged in on each end. If it is still not working, plug a known working computer into the jack you are using and see if it gets an IP address and you are able to get online. If the computer works, then you know that you have a working data jack. If this is the case, please contact the manufacturer for support, as ResNet does not provide support for these devices other than to verify that your data jack is working correctly. If the data jack is not working, please visit our Troubleshooting page for instructions on opening a support case. |
