Involvement Opportunities

The Smith Hall Organization (SHO) is a group of student leaders residing in Smith Hall who serve as a resource to link students to involvement opportunities in the hall and on campus. The Smith hall Organization seeks to enhance residents' lives both educationally and culturally while fostering a sense of community, acceptance of diversity, and inclusiveness.

There are a number of areas residents can be involved in:

Communication & Recognition Committee

  • Create a medium for information to be shared in your hall (i.e. minutes, newsletter, distribution list, etc.)
  • Help with Flyer distribution
  • Recognize student birthdays

Programming Committee

  • Plan and publicize programs for residents
  • Opportunity to serve as Event Director for hall programs
  • Complete administrative tasks assigned with program planning (i.e. Program Planner, evaluation form, request for funds, etc,)

Campus Relations Committee

  • Create sub committees for Homecoming activity planning
  • Get students involved in campus-wide and area programming

Community Service Committee

  • Create programming to promote and implement community service
  • Serve and help others in Madison and greater community through our community partnership
  • Travel to other places over winter and spring break to do community service

Awareness, Understanding & Education (AUE) Committee

  • Promote awareness, understanding, and education around issues of (but not limited to) socioeconomic status, issues of religion, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, political identity, and nationality
  • Social justice seeks to create a society where everyone is able to be themselves. It stresses diversity of all types; more than just race. If you are interested in talking about the differences between people and what it means to be ___________ (fill in the blank with any identity!), then think about joining this committee.

Academic Initiatives Committee

  • Coordinate programs focused on learning inside and outside the classroom
  • Meets regularly to plan events such as guest speakers, study lock-ins, and tutoring sessions
