LinkSys WRT54G
Use these steps for a LinkSys WRT54G to secure your router from the outside world.

First open up your favorite web browser and type in the IP address of the router, this most likly being a 192.168.1.1 address, into the address bar of the web browser. You will then be prompted to insert the host name and password of the router to connect to it. You should change the default password of your router (typically "admin") as soon as possible. You should get a page that looks as follows:

Click the "Wireless" link on the top menu, and then click the "Security" link that appears below it. You will see a page that looks like this.

From the drop down menu shown, select WEP. You will see a screen that looks like this.

Under the "WEP Encryption" drop down menu, select 128 bits 26 hex digits. In the "Passphrase" field enter a password for your wirelss network.

Click the generate button and the router will generate WEP Keys for you network. Copy down Key 1 as you will need it during the setup of your wireless network card. BE SURE to click the "Save Settings" button before you move on from this step.

Now click on the "Basic Settings" in the blue menu. On the screen that appears find the "Wireless Network Name (SSID)" field. Enter in a unique name for your wireless router. Next located the "Wireless SSID Broadcast" option and make sure the Enable radio button is selected. BE SURE to click the "Save Settings" button before you move on.

- Your router is now setup and secured. For more advanced setup options, consult any documentation you received when you purchased your router.
