Connecting a Wired or Wireless Router

To register personal a router, connect the router directly to the wall and then connect to the router using a latop or desktop computer. When you open a browser window you will be redirected to the registration page. The registration page has three different registration options. Choose the third option (WIRELESS ROUTERS, GAME CONSOLES, PRINTERS AND OTHER NETWORK DEVICES). Complete the registration form using either the MAC address or IP address of your router. If you are having difficulty finding either of these addresses there is a link on the form that will assist you ("Find Your mac address here"). Enter your netid, password, and address information into the form and click on register. Once registered you may need to reboot your router in order for it to obtain a new address. .

Connecting a Game Console, Switch, DVR or Other Device

To register a browserless or other type of network device such as a game console, switch or DVR, you will need to obtain the MAC (somtimes referred to as Physical) address of the device you wish to register. Please refer to your manufacturer's documentation for this information. Once you have the MAC address you will need to either connect to ResNet using an unregistered computer or via a switch or hub. If using a switch or hub make sure that both the computer and the decice you wish to register are both connected using the same switch or hub. Open a browser on your computer and you will be redirected to the registration page. Choose the third registration option and enter your NetID, password, the MAC address of the device you wish to register and then click on the register button. Once registered you may need to reboot the device in order for it to obtain a new ip address..

Troubleshooting

If your device is not getting online, check the settings to make sure it has IP address information given to you by ResNet. Make sure it is set to receive an IP address automatically (please see the instruction manual for your device). Check to make sure that the data cable is plugged in on each end. If it is still not working, plug a known working computer into the jack you are using and see if it gets an IP address and you are able to get online. If the computer works, then you know that you have a working data jack. If this is the case, please contact the manufacturer for support, as ResNet does not provide support for these devices other than to verify that your data jack is working correctly. If the data jack is not working, please see the instructions for opening a support case.

Appropriate Use of Routers, Switches and Wireless Access Points on the ResNet Network

If you have brought a router, switch, hub or wireless access point from home that you plan to use in your room/apartment, please read the following excerpt from the ResNet Appropriate Use Policy.

Retransmission or propagation of the ResNet network connection through the use of switches, hubs, routers or wireless access points is allowed for personal use within the resident's room or apartment. ResNet or DoIT Help Desk staffs do not provide technical support for these devices. Any troubleshooting of your network connection will require that your computer be plugged directly into the data jack. All devices placed on the ResNet network must be securely and properly configured, and the resident who registers the device(s) will be solely responsible for any violation or abuse of the ResNet AUP resulting from the use of the device(s). Any device that causes network-related problems or denies service to other users may be disconnected from the network without prior warning.

Securing a Wireless Access Point

ResNet requires that all wireless access points attached to the network are properly configured and secured. This ensures that the owner of the wireless access point knows exactly who is connecting to it. You are responsible for all network traffic that passes through your access point. For example, if a computer in the room next door connects through your unsecured wireless access point and becomes infected with a virus, everyone connected to the access point will be quarantined until the infected computer is cleaned.

To securely configure your access point you should enable WEP or WPA security and/or MAC based filtering, change the default SSID and change the default admin password. Below are instructions for a few popular access points. If your's is not listed try a search on the web or contact the manufacturer of your device. ResNet does not provide configuration support for wireless access points.
