Child Care and Schools

Student families with children will find a wide-range of affordable quality child care in University Apartments, and on and near campus, as well.

Family Child Care for Infants and Toddlers

This type of child care is provided by residents in their homes. Some providers have no special training; others are trained and registered through two agencies: 4C/Community Coordinated Child Care or Satellite Family Child Care; and others are licensed by the Department of Health and Social Services, a state agency.

On-site Child Care Centers

There are two child care programs located on the University Apartments premises.

Eagle's Wing Child Care and Education Program s serves ages 18 months through 12 years and offers a variety of child care options, including full- and part-week, full- and half-day, and before- and after-school care, as well as a full-week summer school-age program. Located in the University Apartments Community Center, Eagle's Wing is nationally and city accredited, and state licensed. For information about openings and enrollment, please contact the University Apartments Office: 608/262-3407. Eagle's Wing is sponsored by the Division of University Housing.  University Apartments residents are given priority for available spaces in the program.

Child Care on or near Campus

There are several other centers located on or near the UW-Madison campus that offer full- or part-time child care from infancy through preschool. After-school programs are available for older children. University Apartments supports quality child care through sponsoring training for in-home providers and in-kind support for child care programs located in the University Student Apartments community. For more information regarding registered and licensed providers, contact the UW-Madison Office of Campus Child Care and Family Resources (608/262-9715), 4C/Community Coordinated Child Care (608/271-9181), or Satellite Family Child Care (608/270-3438).

Schools

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is nationally known for the high quality of education it provides. Schools are conveniently located within a two-mile radius of the University Apartments community.

Children in kindergarten through fifth grade attend Shorewood Hills Elementary School, known for its international diversity. There are many opportunities for school families to share their cultures and life experiences. The school is located 600 meters (three-tenths mile) from the perimeter of University Apartments, so most of the children walk or ride bikes when the weather permits.

Older students attend Velma Hamilton Middle School and West Senior High School, approximately 3.2 kilometers (two miles) from University Student Apartments. Both schools are recipients of the United States Department of Education Award of Excellence. Reduced rate bus transportation is available for these students.

Registration for the following school year takes place in the spring and during the two weeks prior to the opening of school (usually in late August). English as a Second Language programs are offered through all of the schools. For more information, call MMSD at 608/266-6270 or visit the District's website: www.madison.k12.wi.us.
