University Houses

About the Apartments

University Houses apartments are unfurnished apartments for graduate students, post-docs, academic staff, and faculty who live alone, with families, or with a roommate. There are 31 two-story buildings containing 52 one-bedroom, 90 two-bedroom and 8 three-bedroom apartments. The layout of the two-and three-bedroom apartments is in the style of a townhouse, with bedrooms and bath on the second floor, and kitchen, dining and living areas on the first floor. One-bedroom apartments are located on either the first or second floor. Each apartment has one bathroom.

All of the apartments are unfurnished and have outdoor entrances. Apartment interiors are light and airy with comfortable-sized rooms. The exteriors are brick and stone with white trim. Buildings are not equipped with elevators.

Furnishings

Although not large, the kitchens are equipped with energy efficient appliances (refrigerator, electric stove, garbage disposal) and kitchen cabinets. Apartment floors are wood, parquet and vinyl tile; bathrooms are tiled and have a tub with a shower.

Residents must provide the remainder of their furnishings, including carpet or rugs if desired. Residents are encouraged to decorate their apartments according to their own taste, but within the guidelines established by the Division of University Housing.

Air conditioners are not provided but personally-owned units may be installed. Window sizes and electrical capacity are limiting factors in most apartment buildings, so we suggest that you wait until after you move in to purchase to an air conditioner. Residents may also bring portable dishwashers.

Every apartment is assigned a storage locker, approximately 5' x 6' (1.5m x 1.8m) in size. Lockers are clustered next to laundry facilities located throughout the apartment complex.

Laundry Facilities

Free washers and dryers are provided. Five buildings (approximately 20 apartments) share a laundry room, which has multiple washers and dryers. There has been a long standing tradition among residents of establishing laundry schedules. Personally-owned laundry equipment is not permitted.

Utilities

Heat and water are provided by the University.  Internet and cable is provided to all University Apartments through the Residential Network. Residents pay separately for electricity, optional telephone.

Parking

Each apartment is assigned one parking space, free of charge. There is limited second car parking available on a first come, first served basis for an monthly fee. Designated guest parking is also available by permit. Space is not available to store cars, trailers, and other vehicles.

Pets

Dogs, cats, snakes, and other pets, unless listed below as approved, are not permitted. Small harmless fish (in a tank no larger than 20 gallons), salamanders, caged birds, lizards, hermit crabs, frogs, toads, gerbils, white mice and hamsters are considered appropriate pets if humanely cared for, odorless, completely harmless to persons and property, and kept in a cage or glass enclosure. If you have a pet that is not permitted, please make arrangements for its care before moving into University Houses.
