Activities

WISE takes a field trip WISE has special programming throughout the year that teaches specific strategies and skills for success in science and engineering. This includes guest speakers from industry, private medical practice, engineering firms, and academic research labs who all discuss their scientific interests and professional lives to showcase different majors and career paths within the sciences. In addition, the WISE program sponsors social and cultural events ranging from dance and theatre events downtown to a "kitchen chemistry lab": an in-depth analysis of the scientific properties of chocolate, butter, flour, eggs and sugar as they apply to... cookies. Here are some examples of the events WISE held in the last year:

Academic Enrichment

WISE offers its residents many different opportunities to not only help them succeed now, but prepare them for their future education or careers. Our biannual Professor Dinner helps students connect with their instructors. The Pre-Enrollment Parties, hosted by the Peer Mentors, gives students the inside scoop on what courses to take the next semester. At our annual Winter Workshop, residents learn how to create a resume and all the ins and outs of successful interviewing.

Cultural Enrichment

Right off the bat, we took our annual trip out to the beautiful American Players Theater in Spring Green, WI where we watched Shakespeare's "Much Ado about Nothing" under the stars! At the wonderful Overture Center for the Arts on our own State Street, we attended the Broadway musical "Rent" as well as the ballet "Romeo and Juliet." Perhaps the highlight of the year was seeing "Wicked" in Chicago! Besides attending shows, we hold many smaller events in the hall such as international movie nights with foreign foods, chandelier earring making, and a Book Club.

Trips

Every year, there are camping trips to a Wisconsin State Park in both the Fall and the Spring with the amazing Professor Jean Bahr, head of the Geology Department. This year, we went to Devil’s Lake and Kettle Moraine State Park. In the fall, thirteen of us went to the Twin Cities to tour the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, watch the comedy Triple Espresso and visit the Minnesota Zoo. We also made a stop for the industry tour at Cardinal Glass and of course, visited the ever popular Mall of America. In the spring, we took a bus down to Chicago, where we visited the Museum of Science and Industry, saw "Wicked", and enjoyed deep dish Chicago pizza together.

Service Learning

WISE teamed up with another organization on campus, the Biocore Outreach Ambassadors, to provide out of the classroom hands-on science activities at Science Nights for elementary school aged youth in four different school districts. At these Science Nights, we had four different experiments running including the ever popular dry ice fountain! Another on going service project was the Muir Woods Restoration project every Friday afternoon where participants helped remove invasive species, build trails or clean up the areas around the Lakeshore Path. Our Relay for Life team also raised $1300 for cancer research!
