Spring 2009 WISE Events

Majors & Careers Winter Workshop

When: January 24, 2009, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Where: The Pyle Center (next to the Red Gym)
Event Description: Gain information, become aware of campus resources, meet women from diverse science, technology, and engineering fields, and have fun with WISE peers. Keep this date open for a few hours of useful resources, food and fun!

Resume and Portfolio Building

When: February 11, 2009, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Where: WISE Resource Room
Event Description: Come and get some hands-on help with your resume! It's never too early to start this every important document and it constantly needs revising. People at all stages in the process are welcome. Keep coming back every other Wednesday to continue work on your resume and to start working on your portfolio!

Science of Chocolate

When: February 14, 2009, 9:30 am - 11:30 am
Where: Babcock Hall Dairy Plant and Store, Linden Drive
Event Description: Chocolate and Science, what more is there in life? Prof. Hartel, from the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, has graciously agreed to do this two hour event. Come and learn how chocolate is made and then try your hand at a creation or two! Leaving the Resource Room at 9:10am.

Med Student Social ~ Q&A with UW Med students

When: February 22, 2009, 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Where: WISE Resource Room, Sellery Hall
Event Description: Come meet UW-Madison Med School students (some of them WISE Alumni) and hear what they have to say about preparing for med school, what admissions people are looking for, how to choose a program, and much more! Ice cream WILL be involved.

Book Club Meeting

When: February 22, 2009, 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Where: WISE Resource Room

Chimera Self Defense Class

Event Description: We are strong, independent women, are we not? Join women from your Triad and learn some women's self defense techniques so you can stay safe while you are out there chasing your dream.

Dinner and Discussion Night ~ Ran by you, for you!

Event Description: Come and check out this amazing opportunity created and ran by your very own WISE residents! Science Night at Arboretum Elementary School

Movie Night ~ Tyler Perry Movie Marathon

Med School Social

When: March 29, 2009, 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Where: WISE Resource Room, Sellery Hall
Event Description: Did you miss the first Q&A session? No worries! We are holding another session in the Resource Room so bring your questions about activities you should be doing, the application process, and anything you are curious about with applying for med school! Then you can stay for the Pre-Enrollment Party and ask your questions about professors and classes for next fall! Peer Mentor Rachael (newly admitted into UW-Madison Med School) is heading this up so email her at rbergquist@wisc.edu with any questions.

Fall Pre-Enrollment Party

Event Description: Come and get advice about classes and professors before registering for your Fall 2009 courses! Grab a snack and chat with your Peer Mentors (afterall, they have just taken these courses!).

Science of Ice Cream

When: April 03, 2009, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Where: Babcock Hall Dairy Plant and Store, Linden Drive
Event Description: What is in ice cream? What is the difference between ice cream and soft serve? Why is Babcock Ice Cream known around the world? Come learn the answers to these questions, take home a pint or two of your own making, and experience hands-on how Madison's tradmark ice cream comes to be.

Chicago Trip

When: April 04, 2009, 6:00 am - 11:59 pm

Event Description: This semester's big trip is to Chicago for quite a big day! On the agenda is a behind-the-scenes lab visit to the Argonne lab, a visit to the Shedd Aquarium, some Chicago deep dish pizza for dinner and then an evening performance of the Broadway musical RENT! WISE and ERLC Dinner with Chancelor Biddy Martin

When: April 08, 2009, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Where: Gordon Commons, room B5
Event Description: Both the Women in Science and Engineering Community and the Entrepreneurship Residential Learning Community will be hosting a dinner with special guest Chancellor Martin! She will discuss the importance of creativity, innovation and being part of the greater UW community. A fantastic dinner will be served. Dress is business casual. Come ready to mingle!

Relay for Life

When: April 17, 2009 5:30 pm - April 18, 2009 8:00 am
Where: The Shell, UW Campus
Event Description: Join the WISE Relay for Life team and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. This is the ultimate sleepover with thousands of friends, games, food, laughter, and a good cause. Interested? Contact Sarah (sruplinger@wisc.edu)

Science Night

When: April 23, 2009, 5:45 pm - 8:45 pm
Where: Waunakee Intermediate School
Event Description: Missed Science Night before? Now it's on a Thursday! The Science night will be on Thursday, April 23 from 7-7:45; we will leave the Resource Room around 5:45PM. Farmer's Market

Event Description: This is a great wrap up for the whole WISE year! See the picture slide show, eat some delicious lunch, and jockey for a position at the chocolate fountain!

Penny War Pizza Party!

When: May 01, 2009, 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Where: Resource Room
Event Description: Do you love pizza? Do you love FREE pizza even more? The Penny War showed up inconclusive results and darn, the only solution to that is to throw a pizza party for BOTH hallways! Come on in to the Resource Room and grab a slice or two of Toppers pizza! Thanks to everyone who participated and gave to the American Cancer Society.

Farmer's Market

When: May 02, 2009, 9:00 am - 10:00 am
Where: Meet in the Resource Room
Event Description: As long as we have interest each week we will keep a group going to the Farmer's Market around Capital Square!

Jason Mraz & Plain White T's Concert

When: May 03, 2009, 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Where: Coliseum, Alliant Energy Center, leaving the Resource Room around 6:15 pm
Event Description: Join WISE for the Jason Mraz and Plain White T's Concert for only $15!!! Everyone needs to sign up and pay at the Sellery front desk by Monday, April 27th. No extra tickets will be available so be sure to sign up in time.

Cards & Cookies

When: May 06, 2009, 7:15 pm - 8:30 pm

Event Description: Take a break from studying and travel back to the good ol' days of hand-made cards for mom on Mother's Day! We'll have art supplies galore and cookies to spare so stop by and make a card or just relax while you cut, paste, and color!

Early Arrival Ice Cream Social

Event Description: Since some students are able to move in this early, we want you to meet the other people who've arrived early. This is also a chance for you to get to know the Peer Mentors all while enjoying some wonderful ice cream treats!

WISE House Move-In!

When: August 27, 2009, 12:00 am - 11:59 pm
Where: 2nd Floor of B-Tower in Sellery Hall
Event Description: This is the day when most of the WISE residents will be arriving on campus. You will have a chance to meet other girls on your floor as well as the Peer Mentors you'll be working with all year.

Opening Retreat

When: August 28, 2009, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Where: Red Gym
Event Description: Opening retreat is WISE's first big event of the year. You are granted the opportunity to get to know the new people you're now sharing a floor with and you also will get to know the people involved in setting up this wonderful program. During the retreat, we play fun get-to-know-each-other games along with performing skits and being fed a delicious meal! This is definitely one of the most important WISE events of the year, hope to see you there!

Badger Volleyball vs. Ohio

When: August 30, 2009, 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Where: Field House
Event Description: Join Peer Mentor Elise in watching one of the first volleyball games of the season! This will be an exciting intorduction to Badger athletics, just sign-up and come along!

American Player's Theatre: King Henry V

When: September 06, 2009, 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Where: Spring Green, WI
Event Description: This event is a great arts experience! We will be seeing APT's wonderful cast of actors perform King Henry V under the stars in Spring Green, WI. If you wish to join in the fun, sign up right away at Opening Retreat. There is a small activity fee of $8.00 which covers the transportation, ticket cost, and the cost of the picnic dinner you'll be served. The show is at 6:00pm. First WISE Seminar: What do Recipes, Rubik's Cubes, and Robots Have in Common?

Event Description: WISE offers a seminar every semester for WISE women exclusively. In this seminar you'll hear presentations from and have discussions with university faculty and Madison professionals regarding the STEMM fields over a wonderful provided dinner. The first of these is happening on Sept. 8th and the presentation will be given by our own faculty co-director, Prof. Andrea Apraci-Dusseau! We invite and encourage you to sign-up for and attend this one credit class that will provide you with important networking opportunities for your future. It's also a wonderful chance to meet and get to know important and influential people from both on and around our campus!

Student Organization Fair

Where: Kohl Center
Event Description: There are over 700 student organizations on our wonderful campus! Take advantage of this opportunity to talk personally with group leaders from a variety of areas including academic groups, religious organizations, cultural organizations, recreational sports, political and advocacy groups, service organizations and much more! Here’s your chance to become a more well-rounded student in an employer’s eyes (which is becoming more and more necessary these days). Peer Mentor groups will be leaving the Resource Room at both 5pm and 6:30pm to walk groups over.

Henry Vilas Zoo Trip

Tall Tales & Treats

Event Description: Bibliophiles rejoice! We will be having the first meeting for our book club on September 13th at 3pm. Once or twice a month we will get together to discuss a short story. You do not have to attend every meeting, but please join us anytime you find the story interesting and have time to attend. A link to the story is provided in the WISE Weekly prior to the meeting of book club. For our first meeting we will be reading Death by Scrabble . Movie Night!

Event Description: Do you dream about saving the world with your superhero powers? Or are you just looking to have more fun with your new WISE friends? Either way, come to Superhero Movie Night on Friday, September 18th at 6:30pm! It's conveniently located in the resource room (den) and will be full of your favorite characters- from Wolverine to Superman and beyond! Pizza and pop will also be served. All we ask is that you donate $1 or $2 if you'll be having dinner with us- which is a pretty good deal. The theme for movie night will change from week to week, so stay tuned! Come check it out!! Habitat for Humanity

Event Description: Break out your constructive side! Come volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and help build a great home for the community. The workday is from 8:15 AM-3:30 PM, with a break at 10 and lunch is provided. Meet at 7:50 in the resource room Saturday morning to get to the building site by 8:15. WAGS Introduction

Event Description: Ever wonder how service dogs learn the special skills they have to help their person in need?? Well this is a perfect opportunity to do so! Want to know how service dogs learn to open dryers and put on socks? Ever wished you could see a service dog performing commands? WISE is going to host a service dog in the game room on Thursday September 24 at 7PM after Dinner/Discussion night. Come to learn and come for fun - it's sure to be an interesting evening. Questions? WAGS Fundraiser!

Wisconsin Academy for Graduate Service Dogs (WAGS) is having its annual fall fundraiser at the Fluno Center and we're invited. We have been asked to help sell raffle tickets before the dinner. MINNESOTA TRIP

Where: Minneapolis, MN
Event Description: Never been to the Mall of America? This is your opportunity to visit there as well as the Minnesota Zoo, the Minnesota Science Museum and the Music Box Theatre. We will also be travelling to intern Audrey’s hometown for a wonderful home-cooked meal. There will be an activity fee for this trip, we don’t know how much yet. Engineering Professional Day

Event Description: Have questions on what its like to be a practicing engineer? Curious as to what classes at UW really help you in the real world? Come check out Engineering Professional Day on Friday, Oct. 16th in Engineering Hall. Ice Skating

Where: The SHELL
Event Description: Hey WISE women! Anyone interesting in learning how to skate, or anyone who wants to show off their sweet skating skills, join Peer Mentors Alice and Julia at the SHELL Saturday October 24th. We will be leaving the resource room at 6:30pm. There is a $3 ice rink cost, and $2 for skate rental! If you wish to attend, please bring your student ID. We hope to see you there! Questions? WISE's Autumn Day Trip

From Rosie the Riveter to Rosie the Researcher: Paving the way for women in graduate school

Haunted House: A Night Of Mayhem

Event Description: Do you like the thrill of horror? Do you like getting scared out of your pants? Come join UW-Madison's Saddle and Sirloin Club in celebrating Halloween and help stamp out hunger! The annual Haunted House will once again be held in the Old Horse Barn (Elm Dr. and Linden Dr.) October 29th and 30th from 7:00pm-10:00pm Admission costs $1 or a non-perishable food item, with all proceeds going to Second Harvest food pantry. Trick-or-Treat Extravaganza!

Where: Sellery 2B
Event Description: For all of those who love Halloween, and wish it was the same as when you were a kid, this event is for you! Come make your very own trick-or-treat bags with your floor mates!!! Then indulge in sweet goodness as you trick-or-treat each others rooms. To participate in this wonderful event, buy some candy and have it in your room on one of these two days and show up to the Resource Room to create your own trick-or-treat bag. On Friday the 30th the fun begins at 5:00pm and it happens all over again from 3:30 to 4:30pm on Saturday the 31st. Pre-enrollment Party

Science Night at McFarland School!

Where: McFarland Elementary
Event Description: Are you interested in science outreach? Do you want to inspire a love of science in young people? Want a home cooked meal from the PTA? Get involved in our teaming up with Biocore to host a fun science night for elementary school children. The first of many science nights is Friday, November 20th in the evening at McFarland. Diversity Workshop!

Skating Saturdays

This musical is playing at the Overture Center. We will be going on Friday October 24th at 8 pm. Save that evening to attend this amazing Broadway musical! Synposis: AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod -- a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Horseback Riding at Kettle Moraine

A petting zoo with over 50 animals, a fool’s gold mine, and walking trails are also available to check out during free time. All of this for only a $10 activity fee! Dr. Francisco Ayala talks about Science and Religion
