The WISE Faculty Co-Directors are faculty who volunteer their time to the WISE program in a wide variety of ways. They do everything from plan the seminar course, work with the Peer Mentors, and oversee the program, to things you might not expect, such as eat dinner with residents, lead a bike trip to the Opening Retreat, and personally get to know you. The Co-Directors are the first faculty you'll get to know on campus and you will see them very often at WISE events and seminar.

Introducing the new WISE Faculty Co-Director: Andrea C. Arpaci-Dusseau!
Professor Arpaci-Dussau is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department where her research interests include operating systems, distributed systems, file and storage systems, and gray-box systems. We welcome Professor Arpaci-Dusseau and look forward to her leadership and support of WISE.

We would also like to say thank you to Professor Katrina Forest for her remarkable two years of service as the WISE Co-Faculty Director from 2006 to 2008.

This year, Trina McMahon received one of the Distinguished Teaching Awards for 2008. Visit the Wisconsin News page to read more.

WISE House Fellow

Jessica Gauger-Kiraly
Jessica Gauger-Kiraly
Callahan House

Hello there, and welcome to the WISE community! I’m Jessica, or Jessi, or Jess (depending on how many syllables you prefer to say; I’ll respond to all of them!), and I will be serving for my second year as the House Fellow in the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) community. You’ll be seeing a lot of me in the next year, so I’d like to tell you a little about who I am. I’m a junior from itty-bitty Bristol, Wisconsin (which is between Milwaukee and Chicago if you’re unfamiliar, which is okay, because it’s tiny!). I am a senior studying biology with interests in global cultures and alternative therapies. I think I am kind of a philanthropist, so I really want to help people in whatever way I can. Because of that, I am considering medical school, but I haven’t tied myself down to anything yet; I keep finding new interests that I want to integrate into my life! (College at the UW is good for that! This spring my favorite classes have been about primates and bird-watching!) I’ve played the guitar for about 10 years, and I love finding new styles of music. Dancing is another favorite—especially swing! In general, I like to dabble in the arts. I love to have “tea time” and talk about all kind of random topics. My favorite part of living with WISE has been meeting all of the residents (hey, that’s you!) and getting to know them and learn from them and watching them grow throughout the year.

WISE Intern

Amanda Winters

Amanda Winters
Wise.Intern@housing.wisc.edu

Hey! My name is Amanda Winters and I am the WISE Involvement Intern. I am a junior in civil engineering and a three year WISE veteran but this is my first year in the Intern position. I love soccer, tennis, and ping pong and I think a day reading a good book is a day well spent. As a Green Bay native I am a devout Packer fan and consider Brett Favre the greatest quarterback ever to play the game. I organize WISE events and work with the WISE staff to make the community even better. My favorite part of course is getting to spend time with the Peer Mentors and the amazing girls in the program. From professor dinners to theater nights and tutoring to chocolate, WISE has so much to offer and I am extremely excited to be a bigger part of that this year. If you have any questions about WISE please feel free to email me at WISE.Intern@housing.wisc.edu

WISE Peer Mentors

WISE Peer Mentors volunteer their time during the academic year to assist in the planning, organization and implementation of a variety of WISE related programs. They build meaningful relationships with residents new to WISE and help them in their transition to UW-Madison. Visit the Peer Mentors page to read bios
