In Your Backyard: Four fantastic, free, family-friendly field trips in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve

A group gathers new a wooded area to learn more about backyard pollinators in a field trip lead by Lakeshore Nature Preserve staff.

The Friends of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve is a volunteer-run, non-profit membership organization that supports the preserve in many ways. Perhaps its greatest contribution is the excellent, free guided field trips in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. Read about the July field trip offerings below and come on out to explore your backyard.

The Biocore Prairie Experience (July 7, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.)

Get a behind-the-scenes look at prairie restoration efforts and various student research projects. The UW Biocore Prairie provides a unique natural classroom experience that supports the goals of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve. Trees of the Preserve (July 13, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

A midsummer hike reveals the amazing variety of trees in the preserve. Enjoy an afternoon identifying and learning about trees as they pass through annual seasonal changes. Native Pollinators in the Preserve (July 21, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.)

​Bird and Nature Outing, (July 28, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.)

Join a naturalist for a family-friendly nature walk in the Lakeshore Nature Preserve including historic woodlands, Indian burial mounds, Biocore Prairie and beautiful Lake Mendota shoreline.
