Updates for Housing Residents About November Break and COVID-19 Testing

As we approach November Break, UW-Madison has shared recommendations and guidelines for holiday travel and the end of the semester. Most of residents recently shared their plans with us through the November Break Plans form.

With COVID-19 cases rising locally and nationally, UW-Madison encourages students to return home at November Break and remain there to finish the fall semester remotely, with all classes and final exams going online. If you need to finish the fall semester in Madison because of coursework, student jobs, or other reasons, we strongly recommend that you not travel for the holiday and that you instead stay on campus. University Residence Halls will remain open during November Break and through Dec. 19 for any residents who need to be in Madison.

If your plans change, please update this in the My UW Housing portal so that we can provide relevant move-out information to you and plan our services.

Testing the Week of Nov. 23

Residents are still expected to participate in their required COVID-19 testing next week unless they are exempt or no longer on campus.

If you are normally assigned to test on Thursdays or Fridays, you will need to reschedule for earlier in the week, since most campus testing sites will be closed on November 26 and 27.

  • Residents who normally test on Thursdays should schedule for Monday, November 23.
  • Residents who normally test on Fridays should schedule for Tuesday, November 24.

If no appointments are available at the Ogg or Holt sites on these dates, you may search openings at the “Open Campus” sites (Kohl Center, Porter Boat House, 21 N. Park).

Requirements for Residents Leaving Campus

As a reminder, if you plan to leave campus at November Break and remain home for the rest of the semester, please complete the move-out checklist in My UW Housing and turn in your room key. More details about moving out are posted on our Moving & Breaks page.

If you still choose to leave campus for November Break and return to the residence halls, you should self-quarantine upon returning. You should minimize all interactions and only engage in required academic activities and report to work if applicable. If you are reporting to work, you must ensure that you follow all public health recommendations which include mask wearing and social distancing. You are also required to be tested twice upon return. Please note that if you test positive, you will be placed in isolation. We will move to twice-weekly testing for residents after the break.

What is Self-Quarantine?

Self-quarantine involves limiting your activity outside your home and avoiding contact with others when there has been potential exposure but not a confirmed close contact. When self-quarantining in the residence halls, you should limit your activity outside your room to only essential errands, such as medical appointments (including COVID-19 testing), getting food or groceries, and work (with precautions listed below). Students in self-quarantine must follow all public health guidelines, including use of face coverings, testing, physical distancing, and hand washing.

Requirements for Student Employees Who Travel

If you are a Housing student employee returning from November Break travel, you may still work your scheduled shifts during self-quarantine as long as you:

  • Wear a mask at all times (when eating/drinking, remove only to insert food or drink and immediately replace)
  • Maintain physical distance (remain at least 6 feet away from others at all times and ensure hand cleanliness)

Testing After November Break

After November Break, all residents will be tested on either Monday or Tuesday, and again on either Thursday or Friday, each week until the end of the semester. Details on this twice-weekly testing and assigned days will be sent to residents next week.
