2020: A Year of Immense Challenges and Amazing Accomplishments

As we say farewell to 2020, we thank everyone in Housing for your dedication, flexibility, tireless efforts, resilience, and innovation through one of the most challenging years our Division has ever faced. Thanks to your adaptability and hard work, we have accomplished incredible things for our residents, families, customers, guests, fellow employees, and our great University.

Below are just a few of the major achievements that we can look back and be proud of from 2020:

  • Managed the Spring early move-out due to pandemic
  • Instituted a new fall move-in model with time slot sign-ups and contactless process
  • Accommodated 1,740 residents in quarantine or isolation housing
  • Continued development of StarRez system
  • Launched popular livestream program series (#LiveWithBucky Live) this summer to answer student/parent questions
  • Implemented new COVID protocols (resident policies, operational changes, facility changes, testing, etc.) for fall reopening plan
  • Implemented a two-week quarantine of Sellery and Witte to control spread of COVID-19, with quick changes to policies and dining>
  • Began renovation of Sellery Hall
  • Opened University Apartments to University Staff
  • Expanded Starship food delivery service
  • Opened our first franchise in Dining this fall – a Starbucks in Smith Hall
  • Implemented a new dining model with increased to-go/carryout options, more online ordering, and seating/access adjustments
  • Re-engineered dining menus to remove “build-your-own” items and allow for more prepackaged/grab-and-go offerings
  • Adapted resident programming/events to a virtual community development model
  • Held over 125 HR virtual information sessions for Housing employees and supervisors since March 2020
  • Held over 80 on-site and on-call sessions through HR to answer Housing staff unemployment insurance questions

We know that this list only scratches the surface of everything you accomplished this year. We look forward to building upon these successes while hopefully returning to some normalcy in 2021. Thank you to all Housing employees for all that you have done, and we wish you a wonderful new year.
