Get to Know Housing Staff: Tom Krueger

What is your name and how long have you been in your current position?

My name is Tom Krueger, Jr. and I am approaching 8 years (March) in my position.

What is your current role in University Housing?

I am an Assistant Director in Conference Services.

How long have you been with University Housing? Other positions on campus?

Close to 8 years with University Housing and all with Conference Services. I have been fortunate to recently help with other areas within Housing.

What do you do on a typical day in your job?

Depends on the time of year. During the planning season (September-April) it involves a lot of preparation for summer (planning meetings with program leads/housing staff, contracting, database preparation/reports) with a focus on sports camps and adult programs. During the summer (May-August) it is helping oversee the day-to-day logistics of summer programs with our student staff from pre-arrival/post-departure and billing. It is also helping provide updates/support to our front line supervisors and staff (who work tremendously hard!).

What’s your favorite thing about working with students who are living on campus?

The students are the reason we are here and they also work hard (school/work). We have a small student staff team in Conference Services and my favorite thing is seeing students grow professionally outside of the classroom and utilize their skills along with fine tuning and learning new ones. I also get to learn from them.

What is a past work accomplishment that you’re proud of?

For me, it has been at the conclusion of our very busy summer conference season in August. I take time to reflect back at the summer and find joy in knowing I played a small part in a larger Housing team who helped create a successful experience for our summer guests.

What is a secret talent that your co-workers may not know about?

I am not sure if it is a talent, but I enjoy playing hockey as a goalie in rec leagues.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Crystal, Minnesota, about 10 minutes Northwest of Minneapolis.

Where is your favorite place in the world?

My favorite place is probably at any baseball stadium (game or not).

What are you passionate about?

Baseball

What is your favorite TV show, movie, or book?

My favorite movie is Field of Dreams (I seem to have locked into a theme).

What is your favorite family/home tradition?

Taking an annual trip as a family.
