My name is Walaa Awad and I have been in my current position for 6 months.

What is your current role in University Housing?

I am the Resident Manager of the 500s and 600s area at Eagle Heights.

How long have you been with University Housing? Other positions on campus?

I have been with University Housing since July 2021.

What do you do on a typical day in your job?

I help the University Housing residents by providing help in personal and facility issues. I also help in maintenance needs to the three neighborhoods of University Housing: Eagle Heights, University Houses, and Harvey Street Apartments.

What’s your favorite thing about working with students who are living on campus?

My favorite part is communicating with my residents and being good source for them to make their life easier. I love to see them happy and enjoy their stay in our community. I try my best to answer their concerns as soon as I can and provide them with the resources that help them in many ways.

What is a past work accomplishment that you’re proud of?

I worked as a community aid at University Housing of Urbana-Champaign. It is like my current position, but more focus on implementing community programs. I love to be with different people from different parts of the world, know about different cultures and traditions. This position gave me the opportunity to make a lot of friends and experience the diversity that help me improving in my career. Due to my hard work at University Housing of Urbana-Champaign, I received the International Honorary for Leaders in University Apartment Communities for Outstanding Leadership and Distinguished Service.

What is a secret talent that your co-workers may not know about?

I like photography. I love taking pictures, editing them and make them so attractive.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Alexandria, Egypt. It is a beautiful coastal city with many amazing beaches!

Where is your favorite place in the world?

Rolla, Missouri. I have spent four years in this small city. It has a beautiful weather, nice people, and a great university.

What are you passionate about?

Teaching! Being a teacher is about building trust, introducing innovative ideas, caring, and inspiring. It is one of the greatest jobs in the world.

What is your favorite TV show, movie, or book?

I don’t have a specific favorite show, but I generally love mystery books and shows. They make me think deep and try to come up with several predictions.

What is your favorite family/home tradition?

Preparing and eating dinner with my kids. It is very important time with my kids because it is the time when everyone listens to others and sharing stories from their long day at schools.
