What is your current role in University Housing?
I am currently an Assistant Director of Residence Life
How long have you been with University Housing? Other positions on campus?
I started work for Housing in the summer of 1995, working at three different campuses prior.
What do you do on a typical day in your job?
I assist with coordination of efforts around our Residential Learning Communities, Tutoring program, Cross-College Advising Centers, and the scores of course sections taught in Housing.
What’s your favorite thing about working with students who are living on campus?
They are so smart. I wish I was that prepared for college when I was that age.
What is a past work accomplishment that you’re proud of?
In addition to learning communities, being a part of the re-dedication of the building named after Carson Gulley and the effort to more fully interpret his life was a meaningful experience, and one I am proud of. I have been asked to present on Mr. Gulley’s life over 60 times locally since 2013 (Rotary, Lions Clubs, Boys & Girls Club, WPR, Churches, student groups), often using the video created by Joel Ninmann, Jeff Hinz and myself as part of that presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SvsFtoiId0
What is a secret talent that your co-workers may not know about?
I love to sing. I sing with the Madison Opera Chorus, the Madison Symphony Chorus and in the shower.
Where did you grow up?
My family lived in Bloomington, IL until I was 5 years old, then moved to St. Paul, MN where I graduated from High School.
Where is your favorite place in the world?
I am a willing traveler. I would go to NYC or Paris at the drop of a hat.
What are you passionate about?
For the past 15 years I have been involved in collecting local, Dane County LGBTQ+ historical materials. I helped found the Madison LGBTQ+ Oral History Project, which has collected over 100 local LGBTQ+ oral histories, and I co-founded and chair the Madison LGBTQ+ Archive, which holds over 200 donations of local LGBTQ+ organizational records, personal papers, photos and ephemera.
What is your favorite TV show, movie, or book?
Too many to list: currently watching Special on Netflix. Looking forward to the new season of Stranger Things.
What is your favorite family/home tradition?
I like to garden, flowers especially.
