Changes to Recycling

The Housing Sustainability Committee is pleased to share news of University Housing’s transition to a single-stream recycling system! All recyclables (paper, cardboard, glass, plastics, cans) can now be collected in the same blue recycling bins.

ACCEPTED RECYCLING

  • Plastic containers #1-7
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Newspaper
  • Cardboard
  • Magazines
  • Paper Bags
  • Cartons
  • Paper Coffee Cups (if empty & rinsed)

TRASH

  • Very dirty food packaging & containers
  • Plastic wrap and packaging (chip bags, wrappers, shipping material)
  • Aluminum foil
  • Food Waste
  • Plastic utensils & straws
  • Waxy paper
  • Greasy cardboard/Greasy pizza boxes
  • Photo paper
  • Coffee cup lids

Specialty Recycling

  • Plastic bags – collected near all hall front desks. Loose plastic bags can NOT be placed in the recycling bin.
  • Batteries/mixed media (see map here for locations nearest you!)
  • Donations – Clothing and small housewares can be donated at Goodwill collection containers in Ogg and Dejope hall lobbies.

The switch to a single-stream system aims to increase efficiency and ease of recycling for users after many Housing operational changes and external service changes over the past few years. We hope this transition will increase our campus recycling success rate and encourage better sustainability practices among residents. Check out more details at the website here.

Thanks to those that have already helped with many logistical changes to recycling over the summer! Indoor and outdoor recycling containers and signage will continue to be transitioned throughout the year. For now, please note that all blue recycling containers in Housing locations can be used for any type of the accepted recyclable material outlined above, regardless of what the label currently reads.

Please feel free to reach out to sustainability@housing.wisc.edu with any questions.

Thank you for your commitment to helping Badgers Live Sustainably!
