UA Turkeys and Wildlife

Our community is part of a Nature Preserve. Being close to natural water and wooded area, we are home to our fair share of wildlife animals. We share our community with nature’s home of roaming squirrels, raccoons, cranes, geese, coyotes, owls and of course our infamous turkeys. As residents of University Apartments, we need to respect the natural preserve areas and habitats of the animals that live within them. Please do not feed any of the wildlife. Once you feed the animals they become dependent on us to feed them rather than feeding themselves and some animals, like the turkeys, become more aggressive chasing people looking for food. Remember to look at the animals, and enjoy their presence, but do not feed them.

Some Turkey Tips~

Don’t feed them (turkeys, by the way, love the contents of most bird feeders)

Keep children and pets away from them

If confronted by an aggressive bird, make yourself as big, loud, and scary as possible

Shoo problematic poultry away with an item that won’t harm the bird, like a broom

Don’t run away; a strutting tom may interpret that as submissive behavior and give chase.
