After a few months of our Fiber Installation project on hold while details were confirmed with the Project team, our contractors will be back on site continuing this project starting next Monday, January 27, 2025.
Last summer we began a fiber optic cable replacement project to replace existing fiber between several buildings in our community. This project will convert our fiber to the new campus standards. This project is focusing on the main “backbone” of our fiber network and its main feeder buildings in each 100s area.
The project is being coordinated by the State and our campus partners at the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), with input from our Housing Facilities team. The contractor is Staff Electric and their subcontractor Senft & Sons. Much of this work will take place outside of buildings. No apartments will need to be entered for this project.
The project has completed the installation of most of the PVC conduit in the ground in preparation for the installation of the fiber. There are a few areas where this work will still need to be completed. This work will be done by digging small trenches or by directional boring. There is some noise associated with this work both while they are running the boring/trenching equipment and in locations where they need to drill into the basements.
We are now in the phase where they will be preparing to install fiber and there will be more work in the basements of the impacted buildings. There are 8 buildings where they will need to drill into the foundation wall, and that work may involve some nose and vibrations for up to 3 hours at each building. Those buildings are in Eagle Heights: 605, 206-208, 918 and in UHouses: 5, 10, and 21.
We do not expect any unplanned interruptions to existing internet services. Any planned network outages as well as any impacts on basement storage areas will be communicated in advance. We will send regular emails to the buildings near where work will be happening to alert you that they will be on your part in the community.
During this project, the contractors will park along the driveways of our parking lots with their equipment and trailers. Please use caution when backing in and out of the parking stalls in these lots.
As we start this next phase we have a tentative schedule for next 5 weeks, but the schedule will change if work goes faster or slower than expected. We will plan to update nearby buildings by email as the schedule changes.
Tentative work plan:
- Week of January 27-31: Buildings 704, 605, 814/815, 307 and 405
- Week of February 3-7: Buildings 503, 938, 908, 208, new pathway between 206 and 208
- Week of February 10-14: Buildings 207, 206, 107, 918
