The University of Wisconsin - Madison started in 1849, one year after Wisconsin became a state. The first class of 17 students met at the Madison Female Academy that was located at Wisconsin Ave. & Johnson Street on February 5, 1849. A permanent campus site was soon selected that would encompass an area of 50 acres. North Hall was the first campus building, opening on September 17, 1851. From those early beginnings, the university has grown into a large, diverse community, with about 40,000 students enrolled each year.
