Yes, Bucky has his own bakery! The first UW mascot was a real badger that was too vicious to control and got loose at football games on a number of occasions. That mascot was retired to the zoo and was replaced with a small raccoon named Regdab (badger backwards). Regdab was passed off as a “badger in a raccoon coat.” In the earlier days other “badger” mascots were known as Benny, Buddy, Bernie, Bobby and Bouncey. In 1949 an art department student molded a paper-mache badger head and a gymnast/cheerleader wore the outfit that debuted at the homecoming football game. A contest was staged to name the popular mascot and Buckingham U. Badger was the winning selection. Now known as Bucky Badger, Bucky is one of the original members of the Mascot Hall of Fame and the first mascot to be inducted from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
