It’s been an unusual autumn so far, with unnaturally warm and dry weather far later than usual. But if there’s one thing this almost-lifetime resident of Wisconsin can tell you, winter is coming. And with it will come our normal complement of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures.
Many of our University Apartments residents don’t have much experience with life in the north. To help with the transition, I’ll be hosting a Winter Preparation and Safety presentation in room 139 at the Community Center on Monday, November 18, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Join me for a talk about cold weather clothing tips, safe driving suggestions, and general winter preparedness. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
Here is a preview of some of the information we’ll discuss:
When driving in poor conditions (snow, ice, slush, etc.), drive like a SLOTH
S – Slow Down
L – Leave Space
O – Observe Surroundings
T – Take Extra Time
H – Heed Warnings
Dealing with wintry weather can be annoying at times, and it does require some forethought and precaution. But many of us northerners who have been doing it our whole lives can share wonderful stories of gentle snowfalls, ice skating with friends, or other enjoyable activities we would never experience without the onset of winter. I look forward to talking about it with you.
