Who's invited to participate in learning community selection?
In most cases all students who rank a learning community as their #1 preference are invited to participate. For learning communities that are very highly preferenced, the group of students will be determined based on a random number assigned to each student. All students are assigned a random number used throughout the room assignment process to make sure the process is fair to all students who submit their contracts by their due date.
What are the benefits of learning community room selection?
If you select a room you are guaranteeing your participation in a learning community for your first year on campus. The UW-Madison campus has had residential learning community options for over 20 years. You will become part of this long standing tradition.
Are only rooms in learning communities available during the room selection process?
Yes, only the following communities are available:
- BioHouse (in Cole)
- Bradley Learning Community (in Bradley)
- Business Connect (in Ogg)
- Chadbourne Residential College (in Chadbourne and Barnard)
- StartUp (in Sellery)
- GreenHouse (in Leopold)
- International Learning Community (in Adams)
- Multicultural Learning Community (in Witte)
- Open House (in Phillips)
- The Studio (in Sellery)
- Women in Science and Engineering (in Waters)
When will I find out my roommate?
We’ll email you with a link to My UW Housing in mid-June that will have your roommate’s name, address, phone number, and email address.
How can my friend and I select a room together during the learning community room selection process?**
You and your friend will both want to follow these simple steps:
- List a learning community as your #1 preference and ensure that you listed each other as preferred roommates
- Log into My UW Housing from May 7 – May 9, 2019 and find an open double room (with 2 vacancies) in the community of your choice and have one roommate choose the room
- After one roommate chooses a room, the other roommate will automatically be pulled into that space too
- The student being pulled into the space will have 24-hours to confirm the room; spaces may be limited so we encourage you to do this early
**If you select a Learning Community that is highly preferenced as your #1 choice, your preferred roommate may not be automatically assigned with you, depending on their random number. If this is the case, you will be notified prior to learning community selection.
I had another hall as my first choice, but was invited to participate in learning community selection. What does this mean?
If you select a room, this will be your room assignment and you won’t go through the mass assignment process. You’re finished and have guaranteed your assignment!
If you decide you’d rather not live in a learning community, you’ll instead go through the mass assignment process. This randomized system doesn’t guarantee assignment to your #1 choice. All students who meet their contract deadline have an equal chance of receiving their #1 preference or something lower on their list.
What happens if the learning community I'm interested in is full?
Learning communities can fill quickly and spaces are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. Spaces may become available throughout the selection period, so please check My UW Housing occasionally for openings. You may also want to consider selecting a room in another learning community if your #1 choice has filled.
If you are interested in more than one learning community, we strongly encourage you to rank other learning communities as your #2 or #3 preferences so that you may be invited to select a room in those communities as well. We recommend Bradley Learning Community as a great option for all first-year students.
I selected a learning community room and now I don't want to live in that room and/or building. What should I do?
If you’d like to live in a different learning community, email the Assignment Office at assignMe@housing.wisc.edu so we can let you choose a new learning community room (space permitting). Include your Name and Campus ID number in the email.
If you’d like to select a different room number within your #1 learning community, you’re free to do so yourself. Simply click “change my assignment” in My UW Housing from May 7 – May 9, 2019 to select a different space.
If you no longer want any learning community as your #1 choice, email the Assignment Office at assignMe@housing.wisc.edu and we’ll remove the room from your assignment. Be sure to include your name and campus ID number in the email. There’s still a chance you’ll be assigned to a learning community during the mass assignment process.
