Fall Move-In (2022)

August 29 – September 1, 2022

We’re so excited to welcome you to campus! UW-Madison University Residence Hall move-in for fall 2022 will take place from August 29 – September 1. Some Housing student employees and members of approved groups/organizations will move in earlier.

Your Move-In Day

A specific move-in date and time was assigned to you in My UW Housing when you received your room assignment information in June. Assigned days/times allow us to spread out activity evenly to ensure available resources and parking. Depending on the availability of open slots, if you’d like to request a change to your assigned move-in date/time because it does not fit your schedule, log in to My UW Housing to select a new one up to two days before your assigned move-in date.

What to Bring

  • Wiscard or a valid government-issued photo ID (to check-in and receive your room key)
  • Printed parking permit (available to download in the “Move-In” section of My UW Housing)
  • Bedsheets (twin XL, twin with extra deep corners, or jersey sheets)
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Water
  • Soft rubber mallet (not required, but helpful to assist with lofting)
  • See what furnishings are provided and what Bucky would bring for additional items to bring and items that are not allowed (we strongly suggest not over-packing)

Shipping Packages

If necessary, residents with a room assignment can ship packages prior to their move-in date for pick-up. Unassigned residents waiting for their room assignment should not ship packages until they receive their room assignment. Due to storage space constraints, do not ship large items, and do not ship items more than one week prior to your move-in date.

All US Mail and packages are received and distributed by your hall desk. Mail is placed in your mailbox. Packages are logged, placed in storage, and an email is sent to your @wisc.edu account notifying you a package is available for pickup. You must have your Wiscard (or another form of ID) with you to receive your package, but you do not need to print out the email notification. To avoid confusion and delays, mail should be addressed with:

Full preferred name (first and last)
Room number, residence hall house, residence hall name (available in My UW Housing)
Residence hall street address (available on individual hall pages)
Madison, WI, residence hall zipcode (available on individual hall pages)

For example:

Buckingham Badger
6206 Withey, Ogg Residence Hall
835 W. Dayton Street
Madison, WI 53706

On Your Move-In Day

  1. Arrive at Your Entry Point
Entry points for each residence hall community can be viewed on our fall move-in map.
  2. Park Your Vehicle
Parking permits will be available in My UW Housing later this summer. You will need to print and bring this permit on your move-in date and display it on your dashboard. Permits are:

    • Required for unloading and long-term parking usage
    • Only valid on your scheduled move-in day
    • Valid for one free entry and exit in long-term parking (due to capacity limitations, you will be directed to paid parking lots after one long-term parking entry and exit)
    • Note: overnight trailer parking and storage PODs are not allowed
  3. Check-In
After reaching your entry point and parking, head to your hall’s check-in location. There, you’ll be given your room key, a moving cart, and a bag of giveaway items.

    • Note: if you are arriving before August 28, check-in at your hall desk. If your hall desk is closed, call the “House Fellow on duty” phone number listed on signs outside your hall’s entrances.
  4. Move-In
You and your visitors are only allowed one vehicle in unloading areas at a time. You’ll have 45 minutes to unload all your items from your vehicle from the start of your assigned move-in time. After 45 minutes, you must move your car. After unloading, visitor parking on campus and in City of Madison parking ramps is available. Moving carts must be returned after 45 minutes or as soon as you have finished unloading your vehicle.

    • Note: if you are arriving before August 28, no free long-term parking is available.
  5. Set Up Your Room
Housing staff are not available during move-in to loft beds. Residents and families are encouraged to loft their own beds during move-in. If residents would like assistance lofting their bed after move-in, a maintenance request can be submitted after move-in and will be completed in approximately a week.
  6. Remove Trash & Recycling
All trash and recycling is your responsibility to remove from your residence hall. Trash/recycling rooms will not be available on your floor. All styrofoam, cardboard, and plastic bags should be taken to recycling locations outside your residence hall to avoid sending material to the landfill.
  7. Connect to the Internet
To connect to UWNet, UW-Madison’s wireless Internet service, simply select it from the list of networks and launch any web browser. You’ll be automatically redirected to a registration page where you can enter your NetID information to get connected.
  8. Enjoy a Meal with Your Guests
After unloading and moving your vehicle, Housing Dining will offer two extra guest swipes per resident account on your dining plan, valid on all move-in days at Housing Dining markets only.

    • Note: not for use at Starbucks, Bean and Creamery, Southeast Café, and Flamingo Runs

Winter Break (2022-23)

December 23, 2022 – January 21, 2023

All residents must log in to My UW Housing and let us know their plans for the end of the fall semester by choosing “End of Semester Plans” by December 15.

ENTER YOUR END OF SEMESTER PLANS

Unless you are signed up for winter break housing, you should vacate your room within 24 hours of your last exam or by 12 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022, whichever comes first. All University Residence Halls will close at this time for residents not signed up for winter break housing and will re-open for the spring semester on January 21, 2023. If you are unable to leave by December 23 at 12 p.m., email details to reslife@housing.wisc.edu and staff will follow-up with you.

Personal belongings which may be needed during winter break should be taken out of your room. If not signed up for winter break housing, you will not have access to your building or room during winter break. Other personal items may remain in your residence hall room without signing up for winter break housing as long as you are returning for the spring semester.

Check bulletin boards for information regarding quiet hours and details specific to your hall. If you have questions, please contact your House Fellow or Residence Life Coordinator.

Note: As a reminder, your Housing contract is for the full academic year. Except for students who are graduating, studying abroad, or no longer attending UW-Madison, we typically do not release residents from their contract unless in a position where demand for housing exceeds occupancy.

This applies to resident rooms, hallways where resident rooms are located, and floor study lounges/dens. House Fellows will not give warnings during this time period and will immediately document any noise violations they encounter.

Each residence hall may have designated social spaces where residents may go to work on group projects and socialize with others. Excessive noise in designated social spaces will be documented. Please speak to your House Fellow to learn where the designated social space is located for your hall.

Note: No overnight guests are permitted during final exam week and during Winter Break housing (if you are signed-up).

Checklist to Complete Before Leaving

In addition, complete the following checklist before leaving your room for winter break. A printed version of this checklist will be provided on resident doors.

Repairs

Winter break is a perfect time to report any needed repairs so that Housing staff can fix them while you are gone.

  • Remember necessary medications, passports, etc.
  • Remove plants and fish
  • Take your bike home (to allow for snow removal)
  • Don’t store your moped in your room (it will be removed at a cost to you)

  • Remove items on or near radiators
  • Clean/sweep/mop/vacuum your room

  • Turn off any alarm clocks and unplug any power strips and other appliances (these draw phantom energy even when not in use)
  • Open blinds, close windows, turn off lights, and lock all windows and doors
  • If your roommate is moving out and not returning next semester, be sure that one set of University-provided furniture is clean and empty prior to leaving for Winter Break.

Note: Once all residence halls close at 12 p.m. on December 23, 2022, electronic access for residents not signed up for winter break housing will be turned off and you will not have access to buildings until the residence halls reopen January 21, 2023.

Checklist to Complete

Before leaving, all residents must fill out a spring move-out checklist and attach it to the outside of their door. Staff will inspect residents’ rooms and document any concerns after residents depart. Failure to complete the checklist will result in additional charges. If you have questions about the condition of your room, contact Housing staff.

  1. Remove all belongings from your room/hallway and donate/recycle/trash unneeded items outside at the location nearest you (see maps on posters in your hall)
  2. Retrieve items placed in kitchen areas, empty and clean/wipe down waste bins, recycling bins, and drawers
  3. Remove all items (tape, stickers, poster putty, nails, etc.) from walls, ceiling, and both sides of doors
  4. Empty, clean, defrost, and leave the Housing refrigerator(s) unplugged and open (do not use sharp objects to pry ice out of the freezer)
  5. Ensure your room has all furniture in your room/assembled and return it to its move-in layout including bedheight (view move-in room layouts on your hall’s page under “room layouts”)
  6. Clean and sweep/mop or vacuum your room (do not sweep dirt into the hallway) and leave closets/drawers open
  7. Close windows, open drapes or blinds, turn off your lights, lock your door
