Halal & Kosher Options
A quick guide to finding Halal and Kosher foods in Housing Dining Markets and locations.
Halal Options
Housing Dining uses specific Halal criteria. A food is tagged Halal only when all ingredients and sub-recipes meet those criteria.

What Counts as Halal?
- Meat: Must be specifically identified as Halal. Pork is never Halal, and most US meat is not Halal unless specifically marked
- Fish and Seafood: Shellfish is not Halal. Housing Dining’s criteria require fish to have scales for its entire lifecycle
- Examples include salmon, tilapia, and cod
- Gelatin: Generally not Halal. Fish-derived gelatin is Halal
- Alcohol: Wine and beer are forbidden, including when used in cooking. Housing does not tag foods containing extracts that use alcohol as solvent.
Other Ingredients to Know
- Fermented foods: Soy sauce, kefir and kombucha are not considered Halal under Housing Dining’s criteria because of trace alcohol from fermentation
- Vinegar: Most vinegar is Halal. Wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar are not
- Dairy/rennet: Butter, cheese, and honey are Halal unless animal-derived rennet is used in cheese
- Additives: Carmine is not Halal. Confectioner’s glaze is not Halal because it contains shellac and is dissolved in alcohol

How to Find Halal Options
- Open Housing Dining’s Nutrislice menu
- Select the dining location you want to visit
- Use the Halal Options filter to view foods tagged according to Housing’s criteria
Good to know: Housing Dining applies the strictest criteria when assigning the Halal tag. Individual interpretations of Halal may differ, so the tag reflects Housing Dining’s criteria rather than every possible interpretation.
Ramadan
If you are observing Ramadan and need meal service to accommodate your needs, we’re here for you.
All breakfast meals for suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, are Halal certified and will be available for pick-up the evening before at the location of your choice. Boxed Breakfasts will count as one meal swipe or can be purchased at the breakfast door price. Dates will be available at all markets to break the fast.
Kosher Options
Through our partnership with Adamah at Hillel, Housing Dining provides grab and go options that can be redeemed as a meal exchange or purchased at Flamingo Run locations across campus.
We also offer Passover meals during Passover to help meet the dietary and religious needs of our students.
