Don’t Pick at It

Harvest season is upon us, and that makes for a great bounty of fruits and vegetables nearly everywhere you look. I recently walked through the Eagle Heights Community Gardens and some of the plots are bursting with produce. Unfortunately, this is also a time of year when gardeners report people are helping themselves to the fruits and vegetables they’ve spent months cultivating. It can be very frustrating when a gardener shows up for – literally – the fruits of their labors and finds the vines, stalks, or branches bare.

Please remember that the items in the garden plots are the property of the gardeners, and are not available for random picking. Doing so without permission is theft. If anyone is interested in getting their own plot, they are available, and University Apartments residents receive a discounted rate. Learn more here.

That said, some gardeners find themselves with an overabundance at harvest time. Many will leave excess produce on a ‘Share Shelf’ located just inside the main entrance, off Lake Mendota Drive. Anything on the shelf is free for the taking – enjoy!
