Recently, there’s been an increase in reports of vehicles that have been entered without permission in the University Apartments communities. As far as I know, no items of value have been stolen…yet.
This prompts me to re-share some tips I last presented in 2024 to help prevent thefts from your vehicle.
- Do not leave valuables in your unattended vehicle.
- If you must leave something of value behind, secure it in an out-of-the-way, lockable location like a trunk. Avoid glove boxes and center consoles; thieves know to look in these locations.
- Consider installing a vehicle safe or vault; online retailers offer many options.
- Try to park in well-lit areas with people around – even if it’s less convenient.
- ALWAYS lock your vehicle doors.
If you believe someone has entered your vehicle without permission – whether they take anything or not — please notify the police as quickly as possible. Knowledge of the incidents occurring is critical for UWPD to make informed decisions about redirecting resources to prevent the activity and/or catch those responsible.
