Talking About Walking

I recently had the opportunity and pleasure to join the International Student Welcome and Information Fair hosted by International Student Services. I’ve attended this event many times over the years, and it’s one of my favorites because I get to interact with so many people who are new to our area.

When I attend, there are two questions I frequently hear, often in tandem.

The first is, “Is it safe here?” That’s an easy answer:  Yes. By all standard measures, Madison has far less crime than most other cities its size. And it has way less violent crime.

The second is, “Can I walk safely at night?” The answer here is also a yes. But in this case, I like to add some context. While our campus is quite safe, common sense should always apply. Here are some recommendations and resources for improved safety during night-time strolls.

Avoid walking alone.
Walk in well-lit, open areas.
Be aware of what’s happening around you at all times (Ears Clear! Eyes Up!).
Avoid dark clothing, and/or wear clothing with reflective elements.
Bring a flashlight.
Make sure your phone battery is charged.

Resources

SAFE walk – SAFE walk uses vetted volunteers who will accompany you on walks in the campus area. Call or text 608-262-5000 to request or schedule.

Lightway – The Lightway is a series of sidewalks and paths that are well-lit and very open. It runs from central campus all the way to University Hospital.

Badger SAFE – Badger SAFE is UWPD’s proprietary safety tool, available from your app store. Use features like Friend Walk, I’m OK or others for safer walking.

UWPD – For emergencies (immediate threat to life safety, crimes in progress), call 911. Any time you feel unsafe or see something suspicious, call UWPD’s non-emergency number: 608-264-2677. An officer will be dispatched to help you.
