My name is Jeff Kirchman and in January of 2024 I became the UW–Madison Police Department’s newest University Apartments Community Police Officer. I joined UWPD in 2018, and spent 16 years as a municipal police officer before that.
My primary focus is serving the University Apartments communities, including residents, staff, and visitors. But, like all my UWPD colleagues, I have auxiliary duties and responsibilities, such as:
- Training new police officers
- CPR instructor
- Lakeshore Nature Preserve liaison police officer
- UWPD Public Information Officer
- Personal Protection Team (VIP/dignitary safety)
- Upham Woods marine patrol officer
Before I became a police officer, I worked for many years in the fields of marketing, advertising, public relations, and sales management. I received my undergraduate degree in communication from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.
My wife and I moved to the Madison area decades ago and we raised our two sons in a small community outside Madison. I enjoy traveling, the outdoors, walking our dogs, and riding my motorcycle.
My community policing philosophy can best be summed up with what I call the ‘Three-Legged Stool’:
- Education – delivering crime, safety and related information to our community
- Facilitation – working to solve community problems through effective use of available resources
- Communication – fostering the two-way flow of information to and from UWPD
Most days you’ll find me working out of my office in Room 131 of the University Apartments Community Center. Consider my open door as an open invitation to stop in for a chat.
