Theft-From-Vehicle Incidents On the Rise

On July 22, a visitor to the Raymer’s Cove area of the Lakeshore Nature Preserve reported someone broke the passenger window of their unoccupied parked vehicle and stole their purse and wallet.

Across Dane County, law enforcement departments have noted a significant increase in break-ins to unoccupied vehicles in out-of-the-way parking lots. Dog parks, natural areas, playgrounds, and other secluded areas are often being targeted. In addition to Raymer’s Cove, other university locations such as Picnic Point and the Arboretum have recorded recent incidents.

The thieves responsible for these ‘thefts-from-vehicles’ are taking advantage of the fact that the vehicles are typically unattended, there are few if any witnesses, and they can smash-grab-and-go in mere seconds.

Here are some tips to help prevent theft from your vehicle:

Do not leave valuables in your unattended vehicle.
If you must leave something of value behind, secure it in an out-of-the-way, lockable location like a trunk. Avoid glove boxes and center consoles; thieves know to look in these locations.
Consider installing a vehicle safe or vault; online retailers offer many options.
Try to park in well-lit areas with people around – even if it’s less convenient.
ALWAYS lock your vehicle doors.

If you become the victim of a theft-from-vehicle, notify the police as quickly as possible. The knowledge that the incidents are occurring is critical for law enforcement departments to make informed decisions about redirecting resources to prevent the activity and/or catch those responsible.
