Maintenance Minute: Thanks, Custodians!

October 2 is National Custodian Appreciation Day, and we are so excited to celebrate our custodians! While you may not see them all the time, they are an integral part of our lives in the residence halls and dining markets. They are here to take care of every aspect of our spaces so you can feel comfortable where you live.

Ever wonder what our custodians do? Some of their job might seem obvious, but they take care of more than you might think! Housing custodians:

  • Vacuum hallways, lounges, dens, and other common spaces
  • Mop and power clean tile floors
  • Take out trash and recycling from common areas
  • Make windows and glass look sparkling clean
  • Clean and restock your shared bathrooms every day
  • Wipe down tables, white boards, and other surfaces
  • Promptly attend to the cleaning-related maintenance requests you submit
  • Deep clean the furniture and carpet while you’re on break
  • Take note of and report things in the residence halls that are damaged, not working, or generally not quite right
  • Greet you and your family for parking during major events like move-in and move-out
  • Give you a smile and a wave as you pass by

We have many, many custodians on staff to support our buildings, and they all deserve a heartfelt shout out. To our student Custodians, Student Custodial Supervisors, full-time Custodians, Assistant Building Services Supervisors, Building Services Supervisors, Assistant Directors of Building Services, and Director of Building Services, we thank you!

How can you thank your custodians? Leave them a kind note on your door or a custodial closet door on your floor! A simple greeting or “thank you for all you do!” as you meet them around your building will go a long way, too.

To any custodial staff who may be reading this: Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for doing everything you can to make University Housing a wonderful place to live, eat, work, and enjoy. We would not be where we are without you. From the easier days to the tough tasks, your efforts do not go unnoticed and are so valued.
